Among today’s popular LCD HDTV ratings one will note that the Vizio, the Toshiba Regza and the Sony Bravia stand out from other HDTV offers. Let’s examine why the Vizio, the Toshiba Regza and the Sony Bravia are receiving high LCD HDTV ratings a bit more in detail below.
The Vizio HDTV is getting great LCD HDTV ratings primarily because the set is attractive and functional. Consumers have come to appreciate the reasonable price tag assigned to the Vizio LCD HDTV set, particularly to the bigger screen models. Vizio sets come with 1080p thereby offering consumers fantastic imagery cast through superior resolution too. Finally, the Vizio sets that are getting the most popular LCD HDTV ratings are those which possess the 42 inch or wider screens.
Consumers are also reporting a fondness for the Toshiba Regza, which has notably dropped in price since its official launch date by several hundred dollars. Frequently Asked Questions...
my HD plan for the Super Bowl, is it still HD?
I have a 1024x768 (native resolution) projector, and I want to connect it to an HDTV receiver (Can't afford the tv now).
I read somewhere that by doing that, I will be reducing the HD (1920X1080) resolution to 1024x576. Is that still HDTV?
When comparing pixels to pixels, that is a huge reduction, and ends up only 28% of the full HD... Is there another way to use my 1024x768 projector to show better HDTV?
Answer:
The standard HDTV resolutions are as follows:
1920x1080 (1080i or 1080p)
1280x720 (720p)
Your projector's native resolution could be described as high definition, but unfortunately it isn't one of the standard HDTV resolutions.
Another problem is that it has a 4:3 aspect ratio (1024 divided by 4, and then multiplied by 3 gives 768) whereas HDTV broadcasts are in 16:9 ratio.
So your effective resolution, given that you'd be displaying the image with large black bars top and bottom, would only be 1024x576 (1024, divided by 16, and then multiplied by 9, gives 576). That is standard definition, not high definition (in fact, it is on a par with the standard definition PAL TV system used in Europe).
I assume you've checked that the projector works with your HDTV receiver (DVI input on the projector perhaps, or Component inputs?), or that you can get a converter box to sit between the two if the projector doesn't support the receiver's output natively.
If you want to use the full resolution of your projector, you would need to use some sort of anamorphic lens to change the projection ratio. These lenses are used with the projectors one would find in movie theatres etc. - I'm not sure if they are available or affordable for use with domestic projectors.
Other than that, I'm sure you'll enjoy the Super Bowl on your projector and I'm sure it will look fine, but it won't be HD.
A final thought: as it's a special event could you look into hiring, or borrowing, a truly HD-capable projector? I have no idea how practical or affordable that would be.
