The Pros and Cons of Subdomains
Subdomains, even though they are a part of a larger domain, are still classified as pertaining to a separate website. For example when you sign up for a free blog with blogger, and choose to go with a subdomain, then your blog is still a part of the main domain name, blogger.com, but, it is deemed as a separate blog.
Therefore subdomains are great, but in certain situations you may want to purchase your own domain name for various different reasons. Here are a few pros and cons of subdomains to help you to make the decision as to whether you should get your own domain name or stick with a free subdomain.
The Pros
Free. Subdomains are usually free. Even if you buy your own domain and hosting account you can add free subdomains to your main domain name.
Great for Personal Blogs. Subdomains work very well in cases where you want to set up a personal blog, but are not willing to pay for a domain or hosting. You are there to share your thoughts, and thus a free subdomain is all that you need. Your friends know who you are, and thus you have no need to establish your credibility.
Organizing Your Site. Subdomains are a great way for you to organize your site into different categories. Even though it is all one site, this helps you to keep certain topics separated.
For example, lets say you are running a large online store, and you have a wide variety of products. You could have your electronics under one subdomain and your gardening tools under another. This helps to simplify it for your business as well as for your customers.
The Cons
Not professional. One of the greatest cons of a free subdomain is that they do not look professional. They are great if they are hosted under your main domain, but not when they are apart of another website such as Blogger, Blinkweb or Yola. This makes you look unprofessional, and people are less likely to trust you as a trustworthy internet marketer.
