Frequently Asked Questions...
How can I split my satellite signal for my DVR?
I have DirecTV with a DVR. Right now I am not able to record two channels at once because there is only one coax coming out of the wall. My landlord will not allow another line to be run by drilling though the outside wall nor is he willing to run another line through the building. Is there any other way I can get a second line so I can use both tuners? If I use a diplexer to combine the signals at the satellite and and one to split them at the wall again, will that work?
Sigh, I DO have a dual tuner receiver. what I don't have is the coaxial line to deliver the signal to the second tuner.
Answer:
Sorry to tell you but you cannot split the signal to do what you are asking. You have to have a 2nd line running from the dish or multiswitch to the receiver. If you split the signal like you want to to make two cables, you will only get a searching for satellite error on your tv.
directv is putting out new dishes that only use one line to bring into the home so that you won't need two dedicated coax cables for a dvr, but they are having problems with those now. I know my husband has been trained and he has installed a few.
Ok - called my husband and he said that I was correct. He said to buy a flat coax cable and run it from the dish along side the place into your home and then hook it up to your dvr. Make sure the landlord won't care if the cable is ran into the home that way. There is no drilling involved - just put it in a doorway or window. It's flat so you can still shut the window or door. GOod luck.
