Aero, Colt And DPMS AR Receivers, DPMS, Colt And Aero AR Receivers
The choice of upper receivers for AR-15 builds is greater than it has ever been. Market forces have driven design innovation and quality control to the point where the user is spoilt for choice. We'll look at three quality receivers out there that each offer something a bit different.
The Aero Precision COP monolithic upper is one of the lightest monolithic uppers on the market. It offers excellent versatility. The full-length top rail completely eliminates the wandering zero problems you sometimes get with separate forward rails. The kit arrives in a box with three full length Picatinny, two half smooth and half Picatinny and three full length smooth rails. Two of the rails have QD sling swivel stud mounts incorporated. This gives you a lot of options. The kit comes with a dedicated barrel nut, wrench and fixings. Access to the barrel does require the removal of six bolts, but you won't want to do this all that often. The unit is made of ultra strong 7075 T-6 aluminum, hard anodized black and M-4 feed ramp cuts are incorporated. This receiver has the small pins and is compatible with the vast majority of Mil-Spec and commercial lowers.
DPMS competition uppers are quite different. They have done away with the ejection port cover, case deflector and forward assist, resulting in very smooth, clean lines. The argument is that it's unlikely dirt or sand will enter the action in competitive shooting and you're unlikely to shoot varmints from the left shoulder. In a competition you would eject a hard to chamber round rather than forcing it home. The weight saved can be used elsewhere. Two versions are offered. The DPMS Low-Pro gives you a Picatinny rail at the same height as an A3/A4 enabling great flexibility in optic and BUIS mounting. The DPMS Hi-rider on the other hand puts the rail an inch higher than on an A3/A4. This makes BUIS problematic but enables you to mount large objective scopes with great rigidity. These are receivers with very specific sports shooting applications and are not intended for law enforcement or military use.
There are a lot of enthusiasts out there who tell you that Colt uppers are the only correct upper for an AR-15. Colt uppers are unarguably well constructed, but their use of large pins restricts their compatibility with other manufacturer's lower receivers. A captive market is never a good thing for the consumer. A pre-A1 format 9X19mm carbine upper is offered. No case deflector or forward assist is included in this model which takes the A1 backsight. The A2 carry handle and 800 meter backsight variant is available in 5.56X45 and 7.62X39 models. Colt normally offer stripped receivers, but there are exceptions. The flat top A3/A4 style receiver is the exception and comes with the forward assist and dust cover - it is specific to the 5.56X45mm family of cartridges. These make great platforms for those who want to build up authentically Colt rifles, but there are arguably better units out there for the same money.

Frequently Asked Questions...
how to use an alignment meter when adjusting a tv aerial fo digital?
Answer:
Not sure what you mean by an "alignment meter" as oppose to a signal input level meter, but most DTV boxes have that built in, in the Menu. Generally it is a bar meter from 0% to 100%. You adjust your antenna for the maximum output level on this meter as you rotate your antenna for a particular station and direction.
