TV Antenna Installation For Newbies

The confusion of installing a TV antenna can be further compounded with danger, if you do not have proper directions. You need to have a clear understanding of what you are getting into before you start. Do not run the risk of injury by not following all of the required safety protocol. Attempting antenna installation during foul weather should be avoided, as it is one of the main safety risks.

The antenna mount is the base for the antenna, and will need to be installed first. Eave mounts and tripod mounts are commonly used on houses. Either should work, depending on the location of the antenna and the topography of your mounting area. Make sure the mast is appropriately low to the base, around five to ten feet, and away from power lines.

Now, if you are planning to have a rotor for your antenna, you will install it at this point. The rotor allows you to adjust the angle and or direction of the antenna via a remote, after the full setup is complete.

Once the rotor is mounted, the additional mast for antenna mounting should be as short as possible, generally 2 feet or less, to assure both stability of the antenna in high winds and to reduce the strain on the rotor thus extending its life. Once the rotor is installed, follow the directions included with the antenna to install it to the mast. The mounting brackets on the antenna need to be kept tight enough to support the antenna, while still giving enough slack to adjust the antenna. Run a cable from the antenna to your television to allow you to make adjustments for the clearest picture, but do not mount the cable or drill any holes in walls. Once you have verified that you are receiving clear reception, tighten the mounting brackets, and install the preamplifier.

Now that the antenna is fully stabilized, you will need to choose a more permanent path for the cable to run to the television. When choosing this path you need to avoid power lines, plumbing, and internal wiring as all of these could cause costly repairs to your house and signal loss from the antenna. If ice forms on the cable, that will also cause a loss of the transmitted signal, so keep that in mind when choosing a location for the cable. Once you complete mounting the cable, you should be completed, and ready to sit back, relax, and watch your television.
