Attitude Check: You’re Not A Chess Player If You Don’t Have These
What makes chess games so interesting is that you will employ a variety of moves for the win. The catch: When one strategy works for one tournament, there’s no assurance that it will work on another! Needless to say, one of the most effective techniques in chess is to add your personal signature to your favorite generic strategy. You can do this by trial and error. In most cases, your style will be made up of several techniques, and not just one or two. All good chess players share the same qualities even though they may have different personal styles.
A simple and most crucial part of the smart player’s game is guarded concentration. When you underestimate its value, you’re likely to lose. A common instance is failing to catch an opportunity in the game because you’re so busy planning your next move.
At times, no analysis of the opponent’s techniques takes place. As you probably know, intuition perfectly complements your level of concentration. It helps to have an idea of the kind of technique you will use during the match. Remember to stay flexible. A game plan is only a guide, and not a fixed rule.
Find time to analyze your opponent, his mind and his moves. Random positioning of the pieces and a come-what-may attitude are uncommon in chess. Delving into the the opponent’s mind and envisioning the plan even before it has been completely formed enables a player to hold the reins of the game. This also gives the player a a cool mindset while the enemy is reduced to complete bewilderment!
The next important point is to realize the value of the pieces on the board. The pieces are allocated a rank and corresponding points. The Pawns are the least valuable with 1 point each. Knights and bishops are ranked higher, and each is allocated 3 points. Then come the Rooks valued at 5 points and finally, the most powerful Queen has 9 points. You will definitely be using these values to work out your strategy. Take note however: Even though the queen holds the most power, it can be beaten by 2 rooks. The King, which is the deciding piece can move only one square in any direction. There are occasions when a decision has to be made to give up a piece as this would help the game in the long term. Take time to consider whether sacrificing the piece is indeed advantageous for you.
Having a vision of the endgame always pays in the long run. For example, which piece would you sacrifice: the bishop or the knight? Considering the number of squares the piece can advance in one directional turn, the bishop is the better choice. Nevertheless, if the player thinks that the Knight will be far more important than the Bishop in achieving the endgame he|she can sacrifice the Bishop for the Knight. Expect to deal with a myriad of eventualities throughout the match. If you have the qualities of smart players, you should be able to cope with the circumstances well. Practice with commitment and interest is the way to getting all the required skills. Include and exhibit the qualities mentioned in this article and you shall witness even a far greater improvement in your matches.
