Using CAT5 in CCTV Installation
Cat 5 cables are mostly used in computer network projects, in recent days using CAT5 for CCTV installation have increased. The advantages of using CAT5 in CCTV installation are
1. You can run 4 cameras with just one cable
CAT5 has four pairs 1. Orange, 2. Green, 3.Blue, 4. Brown
Coaxial cables were the common used cables in CCTV installation, coaxial cable can carry only one video channel signal.
In brief, coaxial cable includes one physical channel that carries the signal surrounded (after a layer of insulation) by another concentric physical channel, both running along the same axis. The outer channel serves as a ground. Many of these cables or pairs of coaxial tubes can be placed in a single outer sheathing and, with repeaters, can carry information for a great distance.
CCTV video signals are carried by inner and outter channels, now this can be done with CAT5 by one pair can carry 1 channel video signal. As CAT5 has four pairs, now this can carry 4 video channels.
As Illustrated in the above picture, one pair can be used with Video Balun to coonect to camera, by repeating this for the rest of the three pairs you will be able to connect four cameras repeat the same to the DVR end, now you will be able to connect the system using CAT5. The advantages are
1. Easy installation
2. Whole installation will be tidy
3. CAT5 passes signals maximum 300 m
4. Suitable installation method for large scale projects.
Disadvantages of using CAT5
1. CAT5 cables are most vulnerable to interference, you should leave 12cm gap in between CAT5 and any other wires.
2. Not suitable to run outside, as they are not weather proof.
